Medicine in USA – USMLE

Updated: Dec 18, 2023

Ms. Kunjal Sakhrani talks about the process of studying medicine in the US, you will first need to complete an undergraduate degree in the USA before joining medical school. This is called a ‘pre-med” degree. Once you have completed the “pre-med” you will need to write the MCAT. The actual medical degree, which is of 4 years and called the MD, will teach you about the basic sciences and you will also undergo clinical training under the supervision of health practitioners. Once you have finished medical school, you have to complete the residency which takes between 3 to 7 years and write USMLE before being able to practice as a doctor. While you are doing your residency, you can also take up the USMLE, United States Medical Licensing Exam. The USMLE is compulsory for ALL doctors to obtain a license to practice medicine in the USA. The USMLE consists of three steps which assess a physician’s knowledge, concepts, and principles. The USMLE results are sent to state medical boards so the initial medical license can be granted.
