Hotel Management or Hospitality refers to the relationship between a guest and a host, wherein the host receives the guest with goodwill. Hospitality management refers to management of hotels, restaurants, travel agencies, and other institutions in the hospitality industry. The hospitality industry is vast and very diverse.
Any time people travel, stay in a hotel, eat out, go to the movies, and engage in similar activities, they are patronizing establishments in the hospitality industry. The management of such establishments is very challenging, as managers need to be flexible enough to anticipate and meet a wide variety of needs. They must also handle tasks such as training employees, handling staff, setting standards, and so forth.
There are no fixed working hours in this field. One must be ready to work round the clock and even in Night shifts. Whatever the customer one faces, one must be calm, patient and always maintain a smile on the face and not be arrogant. Immense work pressure, long hours of work and maintaining harmony with the clients forms an essential part of the industry. The hospitality industry has grown by leaps and bounds in the past decade. Demand for trained manpower in this industry is immense.
Though the industry sounds glamorous, meeting new people, but maintaining ones discipline, even during crisis is not easy. Also to reach the higher level, one would have to know the job at the lower level. In the Hospitality sector, one must be ready to work even at the lowest level, as in serving the customer to room services and so on. One must also be ready to work in all the departments before choosing a particular department.
Be it a business trip or a holiday, traveling has become so frequent. And for all these weary travelers, a clean and comfortable hotel room is certainly a welcome heaven. Small or large, hotels are coming up in record numbers to suit all pockets. The hospitality industry means big business today and it has grown leaps and bounds during the past few decades.
