Engineering

Updated: Dec 18, 2023

Engineering the most looked upon profession by the young minds as well as the older generations in almost every part of India. Most of the students opt for Science faculty only for Engineering as their destination. With the traditional branches there are the new branches also introduced keeping in mind the industry-academia requirement and also most importantly changing the educational scene to meet the global challenges.

Though electronics, computers, mechanical or IT still are the first choices of engineering aspirants at undergraduate level in India, there are new emerging fields which are mostly the applications of these core branches and also most sought after. Most of them are still at budding stages in India and are available only at the master’s or Ph.D level in the present times.

Recently, robots have become faddish for school students and aspiring engineers. Robotic engineering is the science and technology of robots, their design, manufacture, application and structural disposition. Robotics is offered at MTech level in very few colleges, elsewhere it’s offered as a course under Mechatronics /Mechanical/ Electronics/Computer Science.

Another closely related up-and-coming field is AI. Artificial intelligence is design and development of the mechanisms, primarily their personification in machines highlighting language technologies, cognitive systems and human-computer interaction. Artificial intelligence also is rarely offered at M.Tech level in India, but can be studied as a course Under Robotics/Knowledge Engineering/Computer Science and Automation.

Cloud computing is the steep leap for information technology services. This technology is expected to transform the way data is stored and managed. Conceptually it refers to a model of scalable, real-time, internet-based information services and resources satisfying the computing needs of users. Very few colleges offer Cloud Computing as a specialization under B. Tech computer science but courses can be either pursued independently from various training centers across the country or it can be studied as a paper in M.Tech Computer Science/IT.

Taking up Biology along with PCM opens up a whole new set of engineering fields in the life sciences sector. One such sector is Biomedical Engineering. It is a revolutionary career path that applies engineering principles to medicine, the human body and natural sciences that work to create and support life. There are immense job opportunities in design and manufacture of therapeutic and surgical devices, artificial organs, medical imaging systems, computer modeling, laser techniques and so on. Other bio related engineering fields include Biotechnology, Genetic, Food Technology, Dairy Technology, Agriculture, Bio Informatics, and so on.

The most popular branches of engineering have been Civil, Mechanical, IT, Chemical and Electrical. There is no field which we can say is not flourishing or promising. The question is how deep you can dig the well? Nevertheless, the single traditional branch of engineering that has seen a rise in demand is Civil Engineering. The change in the Infrastructure can be seen in the rural as well as the urban India and hence opens up job opportunities for engineers related to this field. Also there is high demand for Electronics and Electronic and Telecommunication Engineers with the new and changing communication modes.

Another branch that has started gaining importance is GIS and Remote Sensing. It widespread use is exemplified not only in areas of Research and Defence but also in everyday life, with technologies like Google earth, GPS tracking systems, geotagging, etc. And the one branch that has consistently maintained its demand and supply is Mechanical. Nowadays the compass of Mechanical Engineering is expanding to new areas such as Aerospace, Automobiles, Material Sciences, etc. Besides, though IT still might seem the talk of the town for engineering aspirants, the hiring scene is quite different.
