In India there has been increase in students enrolling for distance learning courses. The availability of distance learning courses has assured that a person can pursue education from any state or university that he or she desires. As the course fee of these courses is much lesser than the regular courses, distance-learning courses in India have also become popular in the rural areas.
The need for distance education courses has been due to non availability of
(a) Time (b) money or (c) flexibility / mobility to attend regular University Courses.
The admissions in regular University courses have become highly competitive due to limited number of seats available in specialized professional courses. Distance Education Council is an organization responsible for the promotion and coordination of the Open University and distance education system and for determination of its standards in India.
Nowadays distance learning and correspondence is used interchangeably. Earlier courses were offered only through correspondence that is study material was sent through post and one had to study that material only for clearing all assignments and exams. Mostly non-practical subjects were offered through correspondence. Now even practical orients subjects like MCA, B.Tech, M.Tech, Ph.D are also offered through correspondence.
Nowadays many university / college offering course through distance mode, has contact centers in various cities/towns. Their are faculties and staff attached to these centers and weekend or evening classes are held for students to attend. Exams are also held at these centers only. There is no need for the student to go the university campus. This changed version of correspondence course has come to be known as distance learning method.
