A career in Accountancy encompasses virtually all fields of commercial activity whether in the manufacturing industry, retail marketing, banking consultancy or even Government service. Accountants deal with financial management & control. The most prestigious of careers in accountancy is that of a chartered accountant. With the rapid growth of the corporate sector the opportunities for Chartered Accountants has grown. Many C.

A’s occupy key posts in business firms. They deal with the management of money prepare & analyze accounts & private finance advice. A charted accountant is a person who is accepted as a member of the institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) after having passed the final examination for the Chartered accountancy Course conducted by the institute


• They maintain the records of financial transactions, which every organization is required to keep by law. They keep records of the income & Expenditure of the company & form the basis of the annual accounts.


• A firm’s Account books need to be audited by a qualified accountants, & certified to be ‘true & fair’ giving full view of the company’s books


• Public Sector organizations must have their accounts checked by an appointed firm of accountants. C.A’s are members of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India. Only members of the Institute can call themselves Chartered Accountants. Under the companies act, C.A’s in Professional practice are authorized to audit Company accounts. NATURE OF WORK


• Charted Accountants are found to be working in private practice or as employees in a firm. The range of work in private practice can vary enormously according to the size and place of practice. If it is large practicing firm there is greater specialization of individual accountants within the organization. CA specialize in the following disciplines:


• Financial Accounting

• Auditing

• Cost Accounting

• Tax Management

• Consultancy WORKING CONDITIONS

• Accountants and auditors work in offices. Public accountants visit the offices of clients while conducting audits.

• Accountants and auditors employed by large firms and government agency travel to client’s places of business, branch or government offices

• Self –employed accountants work at home. The majority of accountants, auditors and tax specialists often work long hours. PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

• Accountants must have good numerical ability and should enjoy working with numbers

• An analytical mind to interpret data, a logical and methodical approach helps them present their finding accurately

• They need to have good verbal and written expression.

• Their work involves discussing financial matters with people who do not have a financial background; hence they should be able to explain their subject clearly •

The accountants work can be extremely strenuous particularly when they are working to meet a deadline e.g. during financial year closing.
