Updated: Dec 18, 2023

If you have an Academic orientation, inclination towards Reading, readiness to Think and ready to take up Socially Relevant issues; then ARTS is the field for you. So, before plunging into Arts stream thinking that it is an ‘easy’, ‘boring’ field to join… think twice. The first two years of college should be spent understanding 3 S – self, subjects, scope. Once you know yourself in terms of your interest and skills you can select the right subjects as specializations thus designing your own scope.

For those who are starting their college life in Arts, it is essential to know the structure of the course and the subjects that one can study. Anthropology, Archaeology, Economics, History, Psychology, Geography, Political Science, Languages [Indian & Foreign], Sociology, Philosophy and many more – all these are the subjects /fields that an Arts student can explore. Generally, at the Junior college level, English is compulsory with optional for any one second language from French, Hindi, Marathi, or can choose Information Technology along with other subjects which include Economics and can choose from any subjects from Maths, History, Sociology, Psychology and Political Science. The subjects offered and the combination of subjects may vary with University.

The choice of subjects at the Junior college should be done carefully as one gets an idea what each specialized subjects has to offer thereby chalking out the career roadmap. While in the degree college, students can select either subject groups with Single Major Subject of six papers or Double Major subjects of three papers each [which again may vary University]; for eg: there might be Economics – Statistics – Geography being offered as one group or Economics – Statistics – Politics or Economics – Geography – Politics and so on. Taking up combinations / majors wisely is essential to tread on careers of your choice. In the field of Arts, it will be beneficial to pursue Masters Degree to get a grasp of the subject. MPhil and PhD is the next step, which a student can consider.

Yes, it may be time consuming, but essential for someone who wants to delve deep into a subject. The most conventional career choices for students of Arts is joining the Civil Services [Central or State] and joining the Teaching fraternity. But, Arts also offers promising career options and one can build a career in the following fields [with respective subjects] – Writing, Research, Public Relations, Internal Communications, Policy Research and Analysis, Program Planning, Administration, Information, Translators /Interpreters. One can also look for making a career in the fields of Journalism, Anthropology, Archaeology, NGO, Geography, Industrial Relation, Liberal Arts, Library Science, Philosophy, Law, Army, Psychology, Research Assistance, Social Work and many more.

One can also find work with Museums, Galleries, Advertising Agencies, Magazines, Newspapers, and Media Houses apart from Government sector, Private Companies, Educational Institutes, Banks or some can even Freelance. Arts & Humanities imbibe transferable skills such as interpersonal communication; writing, research, and critical thinking – which are learned in one area and can be utilized in a wide range of other areas. These skills that one learns are sought after by many employers. Although Arts graduates sometimes take more time finding a “niche” in the working world, it’s usually because they don’t know what they can or want to do or they are not aware of the options available to them.
