Career Opportunities in the field of Animation

Updated: Dec 18, 2023

What is common in Bal Ganesh, Ra.One, Jodhaa Akbar? All have used animation and visual effects. Does not seem true, but it is. The fight sequences or creating the ancient era, all are the result of various animation technologies used.

Animation is basically giving motion to an object. To animate means to give appearance of movement using varying drawings. However, developing an animation career no longer involves drawing out a story on a drawing board and flipping through the pages. Today’s animators work with computers to develop 2D and 3D artwork, models or computer images. An animation career requires a technical expertise combined with an artistic flare. They need to be able to draw by hand and use the latest computer animation software. Those in the field typically work in graphic design, animation firms, motion pictures and video game development. It is a complete team effort. One animator might work on the large motions of a character or characters, while another animator then adds smaller details like facial expressions and mouth movements for dialog. Another movie animator might work on background details, like an object swaying in the wind or moving when the characters interact with it.

Animators work on full-length animation movies, create television commercials, make DVDs, make games for Internet, mobile, PC or consoles, work in the advertising industry or as web designers. The e-learning industry also uses animators and so do fields like medicine, engineering and architecture. They are also used for educational purposes, animation has a place in learning and instructional applications as well.

QUALIFICATIONS

Formal training from a reputed institution definitely helps one to seek employment in reputed organizations since it provides prospective employers with a standard by which to gauge the level of talents and abilities. There are various Certificate/ Diploma and Degree programs in animation and multimedia. These courses focus on teaching and equipping a person in various styles and techniques of animation. To be an animator one has to have creative instinct as well as the technical know-how. Both are two sides of the same coin. One cannot be an animator only with creative side and no technical knowledge and vice versa. The technical skill can be acquired by formal training but one needs to be born with creative pursuits. Presently, in India most of the institutes offer training for using the software i.e. applying the software and creating the animation and not how to create characters, stories and so on.
