Civil engineering is a professional engineering discipline that deals with the planning, designing and executing structural work like roads, bridges, tunnels, buildings, airports, dams, waterworks, sewage systems, traffic and transportation systems, irrigation and power plants, ports and harbors, oil rigs, etc. A civil engineer is responsible for planning and designing a project, constructing the project to the required scale, and maintenance of the project.
To be a civil Engineer various options are like a post-class tenth one can straight apply for a Diploma in Engineering. The entry is purely on the bases of tenth standard marks. It’s a three-year course after the class tenth. If the student has secured a very good percentage in all the three years of his diploma he has a provision to get a lateral entry for his Bachelors’s Programme.
The second option, one can complete 10 +2 in science stream with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics and also clear relevant exams at the All India Level and State Levels like JEE or respective State CET, and apply for a Bachelor’s program i.e. B.E or B. Tech. It’s a four years course post-class twelfth.
If interested in pursuing higher education, than one can apply for M.E or M. Tech after graduation which is a two years course. To get an entry in the Post Graduate courses one needs to clear the GATE Entrance Exam.
Skills needed in Civil Engineering are bifurcated in two main zones; Professional and Technical.
Professional skills required to be successful are: 1. A sound understanding of social and professional responsibility. 2. Effective communication skills. 3. Ability to recognise the need for life-long learning. 4. Ability to function with diverse teams.
Technical Skills one needs to be • Strong Mathematical skills as well as the ability to apply them in Engineering. • Solution-oriented with the ability to analyse and find solutions in different contexts. • Ability to design projects keeping in mind its societal, financial and environmental impacts. • Well versed with modern engineering tools and techniques.
After completing the education, one can start applying in various sectors like Government or Private. To name a few of the government organisations like ONGC, BHEL, IOC, PWD, Electricity boards, Town Planning Department, Armed Forces, and Indian Railways, etc. In the Private Sector, Prime Recruiters are Construction firms. With the booming population and increased demands of sustainable infrastructure in the form of high-end road and railway network, better water supply arrangements and, concept buildings, the right skill set can take you to new highs in your civil engineering career.
